Beirand is a professor of entomology at Kikkesh International University. He's highly respected by his academic peers for his research. Beirand is normally stoic, sarcastic, and not especially good at dealing with people. When his studies are threatened though, he can get extremely angry. He seems to value bugs more than he does people.
Beirand has invented a musical device called the “bug whistle” that he can use to summon and command various insects. Although he's not too strong on his own, when controlling swarms of bugs, he's a force to be reckoned with. Beirand is very intelligent, but his knowledge is mostly limited to his field of study.
